First there was print.
Digital content is awesome. We surf the web. We use email. We live by our apps. But first there was print—our specialty. Through typography, color theory and bold, clean designs, we can tell your story in any print medium. It’s what we do best.
Founded in 2014, Red Beard Graphics is the home of creative director Chad Townsend. Chad holds two journalism degrees plus almost 20 years of print design experience. His passion for design began in the early 1990s as co-editor of his high-school magazine, Spectrum. Back then, Chad cut his teeth on Aldus PageMaker and never looked back. While studying journalism at the University of Florida, Chad served as the co-editor of Orange & Blue magazine. As a graduate student at Indiana University, Chad create page layouts for the Indiana Daily Student and ultimately became the design director for the weekly supplement LUX. He also worked as a design intern for the Indiana University Alumni Association creating everything from postcards to newsletters to the 1996 IU homecoming logo.
All of this laid the groundwork for Chad’s professional career as a magazine art director. After two years as the magazine designer for three publications at the National Glass Association, Chad joined the ranks of The Magazine Group as a production artist but quickly earned two promotions in his first year to become an art director.
During his 15 years with the company, Chad has seen many changes as the company grew from The Magazine Group to TMG and most recently to McMURRY/TMG. He has worked on over 20 unique magazine titles and continues to act as senior art director for WETA, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the American Association of Community Colleges. He creates editorial design—feature spreads and covers—as well as marketing materials, web ads and tablet versions of magazines.
In October 2014, Chad moved to New York to pursue his dreams of working for a “newsstand” magazine. He landed at Habitat magazine—a niche publication for co-op and condo board members of New York City. While there, Chad expanded his talents as a print artist as well as developed tablet skills. Check out his weekly tablet edition of Habitat Week by Week.
Chad’s strong design principles allow him to create anything for print. Whether it’s postcards and programs for the New World School of Arts in Miami or a poster for the local trapeze school or a cover design and promotional ads for his friends new book, Chad can do it all.
